‘What Once Was’
Print release from ‘Nami O’Nami’ series exhibited October 2022
Sitting upon the windswept shore, the sea she never tires of accompaniment. Sharing with her tales of life, love, loss and grief, she listens intently, unwavering and gracious of our tumultuous time and tides. The ocean acts in great service to us, holding space for souls to confront the ebb and flow of our existence. The entwinement of nature and healing is crucial for our journey and evolution as human beings.
Desmond Sweeney explores the balance of colour, atmosphere and value through painting, shifting our minds eye into a contemplative state, allowing for higher consciousness, eventually shifting into healing.
As a teenager, he began to run to the ocean. Barefoot with a board tucked under the arm, he would scramble to the beach and into the waves from the rocky platforms of the northern beaches. For hours he would sit, collecting and dismantling moments and minutiae in the inertia of surf and spray. The artist-to-be soon realised, it is the space in-between sets that teaches you the unteachable. That space between set waves, is the contemplative space he yearns for, and the stillness sought as life’s journey matures. The quiet reflection for endless uncountable hours over decades observing colour and light, etched into the artists eye and captured in Nami O’Nami.
She’s always there, for you and me, an ode to the sea.
