‘Announcing the Storm’ Original Painting by Desmond Sweeney
Own a piece of the Western Australian coastline. This 900mm x 1200mm original acrylic work was created during Desmond Sweeney’s residency at the Heritage Collective, Mudurup Rocks (Cottesloe).
The Story: A Living Clock of the WA Coast
Announcing the Storm is a study of the tactile friction of the Western Australian coastline. While observing the winter swells at Mudurup Rocks, artist Desmond Sweeney captured the seasonal transformation of ancient Tamala Limestone.
During the cold, wet winter months, these porous calcarenite structures are reclaimed by a vibrant mantle of moss and sea algae, a fleeting, living green layer against enduring stone.
"The painting captures the precise moment the Indian Ocean strikes this boundary. It is a study of the coast not as a fixed border, but as a breathing, seasonal skin."
This work pays homage to the traditional Whadjuk Noongar history of Mudurup. It acknowledges Kadjil, the ancestral guardian of these rocks. In Whadjuk tradition, Kadjil’s presence acts as a herald for the coming Makuru (winter) storms. It is said that when the white salt spray rises against the limestone, Kadjil is signaling the arrival of the weather and the running of the yellow-finned whiting. By documenting the fleeting moss that thrives only in this seasonal window, Sweeney has painted a "living clock" a dialogue between the messenger of the storm and the ancient fossilized dunes of Whadjuk Country.
